The Department is conducting design and development research in the field of material engineering and of diagnosis engineering with the use of nuclear techniques. The activities of the Department is focused on the elaboration of new materials for special purposes and on the development of radiotracer techniques, measuring techniques and on the interpretation methods of results obtained by means of applied nuclear methods. New applications of the radiotracer method are being developed in order to provide necessary information for the technology of metalworking, for improving the quality of materials and functioning of machines.
The activities of the Department concern, in particular:
- Modification of surface properties of materials by means of intensive plasma pulses and continuous ion beams.
- Development of technologies of manufacturing materials of special applications.
- Development of methods for manufacturing of high purity materials.
- Determination of the content of trace elements in materials used in the process of creation of works of art in order to identification and dating.
- Inspection of leak tightness and localization of leakages and of technical conditions of engineering installations (underground pipes and ground pipes to transport technological and useful media, tanks, installations and objects of the chemical and petrochemical industries – chemical reactors, columns, exchangers, etc.).
- Testing of life and reliability of machines and mechanisms (examination of tribological processes, determination of maximal temperatures of mobile elements, etc.).
