(Glass from the glasshouse ‘Huta Kryształowa’ near Lubaczów in context: technology, attribution and dating of baroque glass from Central Europe)

Bezbarwne szkło wytwarzane w XVIII wieku w Hucie Kryształowej pod Lubaczowem, w południowo-wschodniej Polsce, było wysoko cenione. Produkowano tam jedne z najznakomitszych polskich wyrobów szklanych wytwarzanych w tym czasie. W niniejszym raporcie omówiono ewolucję tego szkła oraz jego podobieństwa i różnice w porównaniu ze szkłem wytwarzanym w innych ośrodkach środkowoeuropejskich w okresie od XVI do XVIII wieku. Podstawą stawianych i dyskutowanych hipotez są wyniki ponad tysiąca pomiarów EDXRF i prawie dwustu nowych analiz chemicznych przeprowadzonych przez autorów. Ten unikatowy zestaw danych pozwala zrozumieć charakter głębokich zmian technologicznych, jakie zaszły pod koniec XVII i na początku XVIII wieku w produkcji szkła, a także skutki, jakie miały one dla produkcji w Hucie Kryształowej.


During the 18th century the high quality colourless glass produced by the glasshouse ‘Huta Kryształowa’ near Lubaczów in south east Poland was highly valued. The glasshouse produced some of the most outstanding tablewares and other products made in Poland at the time. This study examines the development and affinities of ‘Huta Kryształowa’ glass. Its situation within the evolution of the distinctive potassium-rich Central European glass technology between the 16th-18th centuries, and its relationship to the products of other Central European glasshouses, is made possible through over a thousand EDXRF measurements and almost 200 new chemical analyses conducted by the authors. This unique dataset allows us to understand the profound technological changes in glassmaking that occurred in the late 17th and early 18th centuries and the effects they had upon production at ‘Huta Kryształowa’.
