The possibility of self-localization (self-trapping) has been investigated theoretically for positronium atom interacting with longitudinal acoustic phonons in alkali halide crystals. The characteristics of the delocalized and the localized positronium states are calculated for NaF, NaCl, KCl, KI, alpha-SiO2, and MgF2 crystals. The results obtained are in good agreement with known experimental data. The evidence for non-existence of localized positronium states in alpha-SiO2 in MgF2 has for the first time been explained theoretically.
