The results of research on spectrometric capabilities of commercially available silicon photodiodes are presented from the point of view applications in portable, low-energy X-and g-ray spectrometric systems. The analysis of energy resolution, noise and peak-to-background ratio (the parameter determining the spectrum quality) has been performed. The limitations in basic diode spectrometric parameters have been determined.
