Prof. Irena Szumiel obtained her M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from the University of Warsaw in 1960. From 1960-1968 she worked at the University of Warsaw where she received her Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry in 1965. In 1968 she joined the Institute of Nuclear Research. In 1978 she received her D.Sc. degree in Cell Biology form the University of Warsaw. Since 1983 she has been working at the Department of Radiobiology and Health Protection of the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology where she became a Professor of Natural Sciences and head of the Department of Radiation Biology and Health Protection in 1990. She is the author or co-author of over 120 publications concerning cellular radiation biology, radiation sensitivity and means of its modification.
