The work at the Department aims at understanding the cellular response to ionising radiation and reactive oxygen species of intra- and extracellular origin. Another problem studied is that of mechanisms underlying differences in radiation sensitivity observed in mammalian cells of various origin. These studies are potentially useful for creating a rational basis for improvement of cancer radiotherapy and protection against radiation damage. A special emphasis is put on improving biological dosimetry. The Department is ready to undertake studies comissioned by public health services, biological laboratories or institutions involved in environmental protection.
The Department is formally divided into two laboratories, however, the tasks often overlap and are shared by all members of the staff.
