Profile of activity:

Chemistry of radioelements, coordination chemistry, isotope effects in chemical systems:
  1. fundamental studies on relativistic effects in the properties (oxidation state, hydrolysis, etc.) of the elements of the 6th and 7th periods with a special emphasis on nobelium, rutherfordium, dubnium and element 112;
  2. coordination chemistry of technetium and rhenium, with the aim of developing novel radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine;
  3. isotope effects in chemical reactions, directed towards elaborating new methods for separating stable isotopes important for e.g. microelectronics.
For many years we were engaged in studying metal-ion selective inorganic adsorbents. This work was directed towards elaborating new radioanalytical techniques, e.g. determination of radium isotopes in environmental samples, developing new radionuclide generators and new methods for treatment of nuclear waste. Also, solvent extraction methods for actinide / lanthanide separations have been developed. Continuation of these projects is foreseen within the EU 6th Framework Programme.

The research is being carried out in two laboratories:

Laboratory of Coordination and Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry  Head: Prof. Jerzy Narbutt

Laboratory of Chemistry of Radioelements  Head: Assoc. Prof. Aleksander Bilewicz
