IAEA RER/8/014 Coordination Meeting on Radiation Engineered Nanostructures – Supporting Radiation Synthesis and the Characterization of Nanomaterials for Health Care, Environmental Protection and Clean Energy Applications, Warsaw 16-18 November 2001

An International Coordination Meeting on Radiation Engineered Nanostructures organized within the framework of regional programme RER/8/014 – Supporting Radiation Synthesis and the Characterization of Nanomaterials for Health Care, Environmental Protection and Clean Energy applications was held in Warszawa, Poland in the period 16-18 November 2011. It was coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. The Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT) in Warszawa was obliged to organize this meeting for the participants of the above programme.

IAEA was represented by Mr Andrei Chupov (the Programme Management Officer, Dept of Technical Cooperation) and Ms Agnes Safrany (Dept of Nuclear Science and Applications). Poland as the host-country was represented by the Director of INCT and by the Head of Laboratory of Material Research of INCT. 35 participants who represented countries from the Middle and East Europe, Tadjikistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Italy, USA (jointly 19 countries) took part in this meeting.

The aim of the meeting was to report achievements in radiation processing involving gamma rays, electron or ion beam and to exchange own experiences gained up to now in the frame of this program. The country representatives submitted reports in order to review outcomes of the project. The expected output from this meeting has been a detailed report containing all achievements of the project as well recommendations for future activity. Plenary lectures by foreign experts (Prof. Prof. G. Spadaro, Palermo University, Italy; G. Palmese, Drexel University, USA; O. Güven, Hacettepe University, Turkey; T. Zaharescu, Advanced Research Institute for Electrical Engineering, Romania) as well as by invited experts from Polish R & D centres (Prof. Prof. A. Huczko, Warsaw University; Z. Sadowski, Wroclaw University of Technology; P. Ulański, Technical University of Lodz) were delivered.

Reports concerning nanoparticles in biological and environmental developments as well as application of ionizing radiation in nano-/microtechnology in INCT were delivered by Prof. Prof. M. Kruszewski, G. Przybytniak, K. Cieśla, Dr M. Buczkowski, and Mrs Chmielewska-Śmietanko.

It should be mentioned that Prof. Ristova (Skopje University, Macedonia) delivered an additional lecture devoted to Maria Skłodowska-Curie. This lecture was connected with the facts that this great scientist was born in Warszawa, the current International Year of Chemistry and the hundredth anniversary of honouring her by the Nobel Prize.

The meeting was held in the Conference Centre at the Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of Polish Academy of Sciences.
